Biography

Notables Project
John Bricker is Notable.

US Senator, Governor of Ohio, Vice Presidential Candidate. From his Madison County Ohio farm, he completed law school at Ohio State University and used his Columbus law practice to launch a successful career in public service. After serving as a lieutenant and army chaplain during World War I, the young attorney began his political career as a local solicitor, member of Ohio’s public utilities commission, and state attorney general before being elected governor, serving from 1939 to 1945. In 1944 he was nominated to be Republican Tom Dewey’s running mate in his unsuccessful bid to claim the presidency. In 1947 he was elected to the US Senate and served until 1959. As senator he tried to amend the US Constitution. The Bricker Amendment sought to limit the President’s treaty making powers. Although popular the amendment never gained the two-thirds vote needed to begin the ratification process. After losing his reelection bid in 1958 he returned to Columbus, Ohio where he practiced law until his death. Bio by: Bigwoo
