Walraven Brederode was a member of the aristocracy in Europe.

Biography

Walraven participated in 1396 in the war party against the Frisians under the command of Albrecht van Beieren.

He became "burggraaf" of Stavoren on Sept 8, 1400. Stavoren was plagued by attacks of the Frisians and WSalraven was taken prisioner once and later released. He was taken prisoner a second time, but escaped from the window and left and went to Holland.

In 1402 he received the Brederode properties from his borther Jan, who choose to join a convent. That same year Walraven participated in the siege of Gorinchem was part of the Arkel-War under Willem VI of Holland. He was take prisoner and released in 1409.

He married on August 11, 1414 Johanna van Vianen and received Viane, Ameide and Herlaer. He became counsel of Count Willem VI of Holland. After the death of Willem VI he was temporarily Stadholder of Holland, the highest function.

In 1417 Willem van Arkel laid siege on Gorinchem. Walraven came to the help of the Gorinchemers with an army. During the battle he was hit by an arrow and died. Willem van Arkel died in this battle as well. Walraven is buried in Vianen.
