Biography

Mary "Catherine" Brecker (also spelled Bricker/Brocker) was born on 24 June 1792 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were David Brecker and Susannah Stroh/Straw.

She and her sister, Rosanna, are named as heirs in their father's 1895 will and testament.[1] Several years later, their mother remarried to a wagon freighter named William Stinson, and the family moved to Zanesville, Ohio in about 1805.[2]

Catherine Brecker married John Lowry Cochran on 20 January 1811.[3][4][5] Their known children are:

  • James Cochran - b. 1811
  • Wyatt Campbell Cochran - (1813-1891)
  • David B. Cochran - (1815-1865)
  • John "Lowry" Cochran - (1817-1850)
  • William Cochran - b. 1819
  • Robert Loyal Cochran - (1821-1905)
  • Samuel Wallace Cochran - (1823-1901)
  • Hugh Macauley Cochran - (1825-1922)[6]
  • Caroline Amanda (Cochran) McKinney aka Monroe - (1828-1873)
  • Milton Adair Cochran - (1830-1853)
  • Isaac Brownlee Cochran - b. 1833

She first appears in the 1850 U.S. Census (age 59) living in Zanesville with her husband (John L Cochran, age 70, Tobacconist) and three of their children: Hugh, age 24; Caroline, age 21; Adair, age 20.[7] Also in the household is her mother, Susanna Stinton (age 79).

By 1860, Catherine and John Cochran (ages 80 and 68 respectively) are residing with their widowed daughter, Caroline Monroe (age 30) and her two children: Adair, age 4; Susan, age 2.[8] Also in the household is a brother-in-law, Robert Cochran (age 78).

Finally, the 1870 U.S. Census shows a widowed 78-year-old "Mary Cockran" enumerated in the household of her son, Wyatt Cochran (age 57), and his wife, Amelia (age 51).[9] Also in the household are three grandchildren: John W. (age 18), Milton (age 15), and Mary (age 13).

Catherine Brecker Cochran died on 21 May 1873.[10]
