Biography

Walter Andrew Bratton was born on 23 Jun 1874.^[1]He is the son of Wheeler Bratton and Nancy Abigal Barber.^[2]

Walter attended Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He graduated in about 1896 and by 1900 was living in Walla Walla, Washington and employed as a mathematics professor at Whitman College.

Walter Andrew Bratton, a 26 year-old mathematics teacher, and Clarice Winship Colton, a 28 year old voice teacher born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, were married on 13 Jun 1901 at Walla Walla, Walla Walla, Washington. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Andreas Bard, Rector of St. Paul's (Episcopal) Church, with witnesses Otto Hauerbach and James C. Cooper. Clarice was the daughter of Henry Keeny Colton and Caroline Golding.^[2] (The record for the male child born in 1905 gives the mother's last name a Copeland.^[3])

Walter and Clarice had two children: Robert Bratton, b. 2 Feb 1905^[3] and Jean Bratton, b. 1907. Clarice died in 1939.

Walter was in a World War I draft registration record in 1918 in Walla Walla, Washington, United States.^[4]

Walter A. Bratton was the 5th President of Whitman College, Walla Walla, Washington, serving from 1936 until 1942.

He died on 23 Nov 1943 and is buried at the Mountain View Cemetery, Plot: WALLA-MV-62-43-3, Walla Walla, Walla Walla, Washington.^[5]

Research Notes

• In 1996 Walter's grandson, Jerry, was a major contributor to an indoor tennis facility at Whitman College that was named in honor of Walter who, along with many other duties at Whitman, was a tennis coach.^[6]
