William was born in Wales. He married his wife Charlotte Barrett before coming to the United States. William and Charlotte departed Liverppool 21 May 1864 on the "General McClellan" and arrived in New York on 23 June 1864. William and his wife Charlotte likely arrived at "Castle Garden" in Battery Park (this operated as the immigration processing center from 1855 to 1890). [1] A log entry from the ship's captain notes the following: "Sat. 21. [May 1864] -- The ship General M'Clellan sailed from Liverpool, England, with 802 Saints, under the direction of Thomas E. Jeremy, Joseph Bull and George G. Bywater. It arrived at New York June 23rd, and the company arrived at Wyoming [Nebraska] July 3rd." According to historical records, William and Charlotte were part of William S. Warren's handcart company. Charlotte was pregnant during the trip and gave birth to their daughter Sarah Ann, in a "prairie schooner", while on the journey to Nebraska. According to family lore, Sarah was a tiny newborn with "a head the size of a teacup". Sarah Ann was their second child. Their first child, Charlotte Louisa, had been born in Wales before coming to America. She lived only a month - dying in September of 1863. Eventually William and Charlotte would have a total of ten children, with the last, a daughter (Cecilia Spencer Brangham), born 25 July 1882. This coincides with the death of Charlotte, leading one to believe that Charlotte died from complications of childbirth. William remarried in 1885 to a woman named Anna Lewis. He and Anna had at least four children.
William and his family settled in the Logan, Utah area. According to census and historical records, William was a postal clerk in 1880, a gardener in 1900 and eventually became a Justice of the Peace in 1910, acting as Logan Precinct's Judge and Officiant. [2]
Brangham's funeral service was held at the Logan Tabernacle on 2 April 1922.
According to "Archives West" [3], Brangham left a scrapbook of sorts, dated from 1839 to 1923, containing "clippings, broadsides, (and) holograph notes." The scrapbook is currently maintained at the Utah State University; in their Special Collections and Archives. Collection number USU_COLMSS 238.
