Biography
Ben Brady was a well-known artist in New York City.[1] He was known as a penman.[1] He created the memorial for Congressman Webster Wagner (1817-1882), who was killed in a train wreck.[1] Ben traveled extensively and was married and divorced twice.
Ben Brady was born in 1834 in New York, New York.[2][3] He was the son of James Brady (1789-1840) and Rebecca Redman Cox (1793-1867).
Ben's first marriage was to Isabella S. [de] Chalabre on 20 December 1855 in New York, New York.[4] They had the following children:
Ella Rebecca Brady (1856-1941)
Irene Perry Brady (1863-1941)
The marriage ended in divorce due to adultery. The divorce was finalized on 9 July 1873. The wife was allowed to remarry as if she had never been married, but Ben was ordered to not marry again until Isabella was dead.
The following day, Ben married Ellen Stafford. They had the following children:
Florence Stafford Engels (1878-1962)
Frank Wilkerson Engels (1879-1941)
This marriage ended 19 November 1881 due to cruel and inhumane treatment. Both parties were ordered to not remarry.
Ben died on 30 March 1888 in New York, New York. He died from a combination of Bright's Disease and Cirrhosis of the Liver. His burial was on 2 April 1888 in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
