Thomas Boylston was a direct ancestor of John Adams, 2nd President of the United States of America.
According to outdated research by Bond, Thomas, from Fenchurch Street, London, was one of the sons of Thomas Boylston, a cloth worker of London, who died 1648, and brother of John, Edward and Richard.[1] However, more recent research concludes otherwise. Robert Charles Anderson in the Great Migration series, (Volume 1,A-B p 371) states that he was baptized on 12 Feb 1614 at St Dionis Backchurch, London, son of Edward and Anne (Bastian) Boyston citing the work of Don C Stone, The Boyston Family in England and Their Connection with the Pipe Family (Unpublished manuscript 1997) p 15.[2] (See also The Lanman family by Don Stone (1968).[3] This view is also supported by Gary Boyd Roberts author of Ancestors of American Presidents (2009).[4]
Thomas was baptized 12 Feb 1615. Thomas Boylston, aged 20, signed up for passage on the ship Defence on 2 July 1635. The last passengers to sign up did so on 17 July, so the ship probably sailed within a day or two after that. Thomas came to Massachusetts and settled in Watertown.[5]
Thomas Boylston married Sarah (Unknown) between 1635 and 1640. They had the following children:[1]
On 26 July 1652, he pledged his half house in Watertown for the benefit of his wife and children,[6] He died before 4 Oct 1653, when his wife was appointed administrator of his estate.[1] Also, an inventory was taken of the estate of Thomas Boylston, "late of Watertown deceased", debtor, in 1653.[7] He was certainly dead before 12 March 1654/5[2] when his widow married John Chinery.[1]
