VETERAN OF SPORT AND THE DRAMA RETIRES FROM THE PUBLIC SERVICE
Forty odd years in the same job is a long stretch. That is the record of Mr. E. A. Boyle,, hon. Secretary of the N.S.W.. Billiard Association, who retired from the Lands Department last week. Forty years writing precis and judgments on land leases and sales in the alienation section would drive most men ratty, but Hughie took it all in his stride, and between times relaxation in rowing, playing billiards, and amateur theatricals. Since its inauguration, he has been hon. secretary of the Billiard Association refereed all its championship games and accompanied representatives to the other states as adviser and manager. It is because of his knowledge and mature billiard judgment that we have been so frequently victorious.
BEHIND THE FOOTLIGHTS.
He has been a great supporter of sport and the drama. In the old days he assisted the famous Baker and Farren Company and Marched Behind the Band with Tim Flaherty, supported Louise Pomeroy, Creswick, Alfred Dampier, Bill Andrews, Johnny Hall, Maggie Oliver and other populars of the seventies and eighties. With the dolls (as a ventriloquist), as a sleight of hand artist, or on the sound producer and musical mouth organ he had few superiors even among professionals. As a raconteur, he ranks with the best, and his light musical alto always had a place when out with the gang in such melodic quartettes, as Oft in the Stilly Night.
At a very large gathering of the Lands Office staff last week, well deserved encomiums were uttered by the heads and brother officers when presenting him with a wallet of notes, a pair of Zeiss glasses, and other gifts. Though still full to the brim with activity, Hughie takes a well-earned, rest for a month or so before getting into harness, again as hon. secretary of the A.B.A. Referee (Sydney, NSW : 1886 - 1939) Wed 6 Feb 1924 Page 9 VETERAN OF SPORT
Mr. Eugene A. ('Hughie') Boyle, Noted Referee in the Game
DEATH has claimed many Sydney sportsmen in the last few months, but none better known and more genuinely admired than E. A. ('Hughie') Boyle, one of the fathers of billiards in this country. Mr. Boyle was 73 years of age, and quite active, less than two weeks ago. I saw him crossing George Street about that time in company with a still older sportsman Mr. Joe Pearson, famous in the amateur sporting world of other days.
MR. BOYLE knew billiards from A to Z. He was in request as referee for big games in Sydney and knew intimately all the star players from overseas as well as his own country, from John Roberts right down, the line to Walter Lindrum. He was a lovable man, genial and eminently sociable. Mr. W. J. O'Hanlon, the old New South Wales wicket-keeper, sends me the following appreciation of a man rich in the best human qualities:
THE death of Eugene A. Boyle removes from the sporting arena a figure that will be greatly missed in the billiard world. A great authority on billiards, as referee in the game he had no superior, and, as such, was deservedly popular for his fine personal qualities. 'Hughie,' as he was best known to his friends— was famed as a social entertainer, and I will never forget when he accompanied the Lands Department cricket team to Melbourne in Exhibition Year, 1888. How he charmed the Melbourneites at the social functions with his wonderful powers of mimicry and 'ventriloquism! He was a lovable character with a rich fund of humor. The funeral from St. Mary's Basillca to Waverley cemetery was largely attended. Mr. Boyle, who was an officer of the Lands Department, and retired some few years ago, and at the funeral were many from that department who had worked side by side with him for years, notably J. Phelan, J. Arcus, D. Bruce, H. Spencer, R. Calloway, P. Casey, J. Stevens, M. H. Howard. It may be truly said of him that the charm of his personality was felt and acknowledged by his companions— old and young. Referee (Sydney, NSW : 1886 - 1939) Wed 24 Aug 1932 Page 13
