In 1940 he was living in Nashville, Tennessee and working for the Ira Iron Medal Co.

James served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

James married Altha Collier; in 1950 they were living in Nashville with 5 children.

James passed away in 1976 and is buried in the Nashville National Cemetery in Madison, Tennessee.
