Andrew Jackson Bowman, the 2nd son of George Bowman and Unknown First Wife. was born in 1821.

The Compiled Military Service Records show that Andrew J. Bowman was enrolled as a Private in Co. B, 114th Regiment, VA Militia (Hampshire County) by Colonel Alexander Monroe on July 14, 1861 at Romney, Hampshire Co., VA. The 114th Militia was called out by proclamation of the Governor of Virginia dated July 13, 1861 and appears to have served from July 14, 1861 until sometime in April, 1862 when it was broken up.

Co K, 18th Virginia Cavalry, CSA in Hardy County; A single muster roll appears in Andrew's CMSR collection for the 114th Militia which covers Oct 31, 1861 - April 8, 1862. It shows his enrollment data presented above; that he was last paid to Oct 31, 1861, and that as of April 8, 1862 he was absent on sick furlough. It also reports that he had been AWOL from Jan 20, 1862 to Feb 5, 1862 and from Feb 14, 1862 to Mar 28, 1862. Probably from sickness, but it doesn't say that clearly. A single muster roll appears in Andrew's CMSR collection for the 114th Militia which covers 31 OCT 61 - 8 APR 62. It shows 8 APR 1862 he was absent on sick furlough. Andrew Jackson (Jack) Bowman was still serving in the military on November 4, 1862, when he was 41 years old.

ENLISTED PVT Co K 18th Virginia Calvary. The Compiled Military Service Records show that Andrew J. BOWMAN was enrolled as a Private in Co. K, 18th VA Cavalry on 4 NOV 1862 in Hampshire County, VA by Colonel Alexander Monroe.

BOWMAN, Andrew Jackson "Jack": Enl PVT 11/4/62 Co K, 18th Virginia Cavalry, CSA in Hardy County; Absent sick 3/1/63; WIA 9/19/64 (in the head by a saber point); Absent "paroled prisoner" 10/31/64; Does not appear on any existing muster roll of John H. "Hanse" McNeill's Company of Virginia Cavalry. Partisan Rangers (McNeill's Rangers of the Northwestern Brigade) CSA, but said to have served.

Two company muster rolls appear in Andrew's CMSR collection: the first covers January & February 1863 and reports that Andrew was absent sick as of the end of the muster period on 28 FEB 1863. Muster rolls covering March 1863 through August 1864 for Co. K, 18th VA Cavalry are missing and presumed lost or destroyed during the war. The second muster roll in Andrew's CMSR collection for the 18th VA Cavalry covers 30 AUG 64 - 31 OCT 64 (i.e., the standard two month muster period August & September 1864). This record reports that Andrew was absent as a paroled prisoner. He is listed as "Wounded in Action (head with a saber)".

Andrew Jackson (Jack) Bowman served in the military on October 31, 1864, in Delaware when he was 43 years old. The second muster roll in Andrew's CMSR collection for the 18th VA Cavalry covers 30 AUG 64 - 31 OCT 64 (i.e., the standard two-month muster period August & September 1864). This record reports that Andrew was absent as a paroled prisoner. He is listed as "Absent paroled prisoner" (see History of Hampshire County).
