Gladys E. (Bowman) Watts
Loved helping and inspiring others to achieve Gladys E. (Bowman) Watts, age 91, 3755 First St., Bloomsburg (Almedia), died at 9:26 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2009, at the Columbia-Montour Hospice at Maria Hall, Danville, after a brief illness. Born on Nov. 28, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Wesley and Alice (Thomas) Bowman. Mrs. Watts grew up in Bloomsburg and was a 1937 graduate of Bloomsburg High School. In 1940, she married Donald Albert Watts of Millville and he preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 1997. He was a high school teacher and administrator and later became the first executive director of the Bloomsburg University Alumni Association. Mrs. Watts was employed as an administrative assistant in the anesthesia department of the Hackensack (N.J.) Hospital. Prior to returning to Bloomsburg in 1975, she lived in Watsontown; Johnstown; Libertyville, Ill., and Harrington Park, N.J. While residing in Libertyville, she was a member of the United Methodist Church. Until the onset of her recent illness, Mrs. Watts had been actively involved with a number of social and family groups. Surviving are two sons: Donald A. Watts Jr. and his wife Kathy, Oakton, Va., and Thomas B. Watts and his wife Katie, Lexington Park, Md.; a foster daughter, Ginny Barton, Berwick; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two nieces: Joyce Johnson and Margaret Lemons, both of Orangeville. She was the last of a family of 12 children, having been preceded in death by six brothers: Henry Bowman, Maxwell Bowman, Millard Bowman, Harry Bowman, Paul Bowman and Bruce Bowman; and five sisters: Helen Pennington, Elsie Wright, Emily Bogart, Pauline Bomboy and Violet Bowman. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg with Columbia-Montour Hospice Chaplain David A. Borton officiating. Interment in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Orangeville. There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Gladys E. Watts Scholarship Fund, c/o Maryland Bank and Trust Co., 3220 Old Washington Road, Waldorf, MD 20602.
