Alfred was born on 20 August 1868 at View Park. His parents were John Bowes and Margaret Venning Harvey. John was born in 1846 and was a farmer. He married Margaret in 1867 at the Free Church Chapel in the district of Port Gawler. John’s father was also called John and was born about 1812 [died in 1859 at Gawler Plains]. He was also a farmer and married Ann Turnbull [born 1817].
Alfred’s siblings were:

Alfred worked as a labourer, and at the age of 24 he Alice Rebecca Berry at the residence of her father Joseph Berry in Adelaide on 3 July 1893.
They had three children;

Olive Myrtle Bowes b. 24 August 1898 in Hindmarsh
Joseph Barclay Bowes b. 23 June 1905 in Mannum d. 2 January 1947 in Payneham
Alfred enlisted on 14 July 1915 when he was almost 45 years old. His wife Alice was living at Ralph Street, Kilkenny. He had served for three years in the Citizens Forces in “C” Company at Kadina.
He was placed in the 11th Reinforcements 8th Battalion. After initial training in Seymour then to Bendigo, he was sent to the Middle East in October 1915. He was soon discovered to be ill. A medical report dated 30 December 1915 at Helouan, Egypt says that Alfred first had signs of his problem in 1905. He had a history of chest problems during the last 10 years, shortness of breath and a cough. He had a patch in the base of his left lung.
He was diagnosed with tuberculosis. He had been a miner and worked in dust a great deal. It was decided to discharge him from the army. He embarked at Suez on the Nestor on 9 February 1916.
Alfred died at Caulfield Military hospital on 4 April 1919 and was buried at Brighton Cemetery, Melbourne on 5 April 1919.
