Biography

Jeanne Boutilier was born July 15, 1739, the daughter of Jean George and Sara (Grange) Boutilier of Etobon, a French-speaking village in the County of Montbélaird, now part of the Franche Comté region in France. This small "city-state" was independent in the 18th Century, ruled by the Duke of Württemberg, and many of its inhabitants were Lutheran Protestant Christians. Fearing religious persecution by their much-larger Roman Catholic neighbor, France, some emigrated abroad, including several families invited to re-colonize Nova Scotia, after the Protestant-led English had assumed control of that province from France and expelled the French Roman Catholic Acadian colonists. This migration took place between 1749 and 1752.[1]

In 1752, Jeanne Bouteillier emigrated to Nova Scotia with her parents and family. They did not survive the voyage.[2], where she died in an orphanage in Halifax in 1753.[2]
