Due to the controversy about her relationship to a known PGM-era immigrant, the PGM project is managing this profile. Thank you.
While there may have been an Ann Bourne, daughter of Thomas Bourne and Elizabeth Roos, she was NOT the wife of Richard Bowen, emigrant to Rehoboth, Massachusetts.[1] The initial introduction of this error was in 1884, on a pedigree chart attached to the Memorial of the Bowen Family, which added a wife Ann with no source or explanation in the text of the publication.[2] This was called out as a fabrication by Richard LeBaron Bowen Jr. in "The Ancestry, Wives and Children of Richard Bowen of Weymouth and Rehoboth, Massachusetts" in 2001.[1]
A review of the sources listed in New England Marriages Prior to 1700[3] turned up only a single reference to a last name. In the Genealogy column of the Boston Transcript 21 September 1925, a response to a query stated that Richard Bowen married "Ann Born."[4] All other publications either did not mention his first wife, or only referred to her as Ann.
