Bennett was born in 1820, the second son and third child of Bennett Bourn Sr and Catherine Musick. His siblings were: Catherine and Richard.

Research Notes

Discrepancy in Surname (Bourn or Bowen):

• Early records indicate the surname as Bourn (spelled without an 'e'); however, the pension records of his widow spells the surname as Bowen, and the descendants spelled the name as Bowen.
• All of his wife's records indicate her married name is spelled "Bowen".

Discrepancy in Date of Birth:

• Memorial 160503366 states he was born in 1816 (no marker); however, the census records indicate he was born about 1820. There are no other indicators of birth.^[11]

Discrepancy in Date of Death and Burial Location:

• Widow's Pension claims he died in 1862 in Richmond, Virginia from a war wound. Other family records indicate he died in 1864, see Memorial 160503366.
• Memorial 160503366 states his burial location is unknown, but presumed to be in Ware County, Georgia.
• Memorial 9786209 is located in Richmond, Virginia (Section U Grave 309; no marker) for a Pvt A Bowen, died 12 Jul 1864. This is more likely the burial location of Bennett Bourn.
