Upon leaving the army, he originally set up a business in Brussels, but became interested in the United States after their Centennial in 1876. He, and his wife, then travelled directly to California. [1]
He settled in San Francisco originally, but moved to San Jose in 1879 and established a florist business. [1]

Family

Emile was married twice. First in Belgium to Eliza Prueing. Their son Frank was born in 1877 in San Francisco and worked along side his father as a floriculturist until the age of twenty-eight.
Later, while in San Jose, he married Miss Oraza Waltham of Nova Scotia. [1]

Emile passed away on August 2, 1916 "rich in the accomplishments of seventy-two worthwhile years, and also rich in friends and the esteem of his fellow-men..." [1]

Research Notes

According to the following record, Emile married a Victoire Joseph Vangysel in Brussels in 1872. Here, he is listed as having been born three years earlier than stated in History of Santa Clara County California and his birthplace being Roux-Miroir. He was living in La Hulpe at the time. [2]
