MASS GRAVE

Watkins & Minnick are taking up the bodies in the old Presbyterian graveyard for the purpose of removal. The Christian church now owns the lot. They have in all 103 to take up and a good many that are not marked. For instance from one lot, that occupied by the Boults and Maynards, there were 13 bodies and only one stone. The remains of the late Thos. A. Boult still bore traces of the great long beard that characterized him in life.

Two of the bodies were curious in that they were buried in cast iron caskets, a close imitation of the Egyptian mummy case and with a plate screwed over the face. One body was that of a small infant in a tiny little case, which must have been handsome when first cast and the other was that of a 16-year-old boy, buried in 1854, William Crawford Thompson, son of Victor and Margaret Thompson. Mr. Thompson being a druggist here.

The casket was very heavy and the shape of the body. One was full of water and that made it heavier. Few people about here ever saw the like. The casket was with a drapery effect for the covering.

All the graves were deep in the ground and had heavy stones laid on the coffin lids. The men opened the grave of the Rev. Dr. Farouhar, a Scottish divine, who was buried in 1822 at the age of 93 years. His teeth were sound. His remains and that of his family to to Mt. Joy, Pa. Near him lay Nathaniel Martin, also aged 93, and his wife, aged 97. Numerous ministers were about, some from Scotland, some from New York and some from Philadelphia. In some of the graves no trace of the caskets were found, only the bones. Many of the names have faded from among our people, such as Sturr, Magoffin, Pott, Biays, Ferguson, Robertson, Tusten, Ogilby, Hagerman, Leeds and so forth.

The bodies go to Rose Hill and mostly are cared for by the descendants.
