The son of Jacob White Boughner and Julia Ann (Edmiston) White, Phillip Boughner was born in Rooks County, Kansas[citation needed] in 1895, residing with his family by 1900 in Big Bend Township, Kansas.[1] By 1910, Phillip and his family had settled in Natoma, Kansas, where his father worked as a bank president.[2]
Phillip registered for the World War I draft when he was 22, registering in Natoma, Kansas on June 5, 1917.[3] He stated that he lived with his family in Natoma and that he worked as a professional musician but that he was not employed at the time of his draft registration. Phillip was described as a man of medium height and build, with light-colored hair and blue eyes. He enlisted in the United States Army, enlisting on August 6, 1917 and serving as a Band Leader in the 340th Field Artillery Division; he was discharged on June 5, 1919.[4]
After the war, he returned to Kansas, marrying Grace G Cunningham (1897-), taking up residence together in Franklin, Nebraska, where they each worked as music instructors.[5] By 1930, they had returned to Kansas, residing in Russell Township, where Phillip taught in the city schools.[6][7]
Phillip registered for the World War II draft when he was 47, registering in Russell, Kansas on April 27, 1942.[8] He stated that he lived at 626 Foster Street in Russell, Kansas and that he worked as a high school teacher, working in School District Number 5. Phillip was described as 5'7" tall and 140 pounds and, having registered in the "old man's draft," did not enlist.
Phillip and his wife are believed to have retired to California, where he passed away.[citation needed] He is buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.[9]
