Obituary

After her gallant and valiant battle with illness, Carrie B. Richardson made a peaceful transition at home with her husband, sons, grandchildren and friends at her side on November 8, 2014.

She leaves a legacy of considerable and commendable community service to both Indianapolis, IN and the San Francisco East Bay Area. May the many who were fortunate enough to have been blessed by her grace, generosity , intelligence, kindness and service, pause and reflect on the loss of an Angel.

Born September 20, 1935 in Houston, Texas, she was the third of four children to her parents, long shoreman Tom Savian Boudreaux and homemaker Helen E. Boudreaux. Carrie attended Phyllis Wheatley High School, where she distinguished herself as valedictorian of her class, Senior Class Queen "Miss Wheatley," and the first recipient of the E.E. Worthing Award, earning a full scholarship to the college of her choice. She chose Fisk University, one of the most prestigious African American universities in the South at the time, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, with a minor in Sociology.

Carrie met her college sweetheart James M. Richardson, then a first-year medical student, at a dance early in her freshman year at Fisk. They married in Houston, Texas on June 16, 1957 upon their graduations from Fisk University and Meharry Medical College, respectively.

Carrie's professional history included work as a child welfare and old age security social worker, job development specialist, manager and supervisor for the Bay Area Urban League. She later switched careers after earning a certificate in paralegal studies at St. Mary's College in Moraga, California. She "retired" in the early 1970's, preferring to spend her time raising and supporting her two children.

Carrie held membership and served admirably in numerous organizations, including the Alameda Contra Costa Links, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority as a founding member of the Alameda Contra Costa Alumna Chapter, Sinkler-Miller Medical Auxiliary, Downs Memorial United Methodist Church Scholarship Committee and Goodwill Ambassador to Shimada, Japan. However, she attained her best satisfaction co-founding and serving the Athletic Supporters of Kennedy High School, Richmond, CA, a volunteer organization which raised funds for the high school sports programs. Carrie considered her most important roles in life as: wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. But, she considered her role as grandmother the most coveted of all.

Carrie, affectionately called "Tweetie" by her husband James, exhibited interest in water color painting, playing the piano, writing poetry and short stories, traveling, volunteering, shopping with friends, and partaking in Japanese language and culture.

Carrie is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, James Milton Richardson, M.D., children Michael James Richardson, MD of Princeton, NJ and his wife Mako Mishima Richardson of Kyoto, Japan, Stephen Victor Richardson of Tracy, CA., and his wife Noriko Watanabe Richardson from Kashiwa, Japan. Her four grandchildren include Jennifer Erika Richardson, Leland Geoffrey Kai Richardson, Anthony Sho Richardson, and Julian Ulysses Ou Richardson.[1]
