Lewis was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted in the Union Army's Company B, 1st Regiment, Vermont Cavalry on 23 Sep 1861. He mustered in as Private on 19 Nov 1861 for three years service. He mustered out on 18 Nov 1864.[1][2]
Lewis was private orderly to General Hancock during the war.[3]
The 1st Vermont Cavalry was mustered into service on 19 Nov 1861 at Burlington, Vermont. The Regiment was engaged in the Battles of Winchester, Gettysburg, Winchester (third battle) and Cedar Creek. They were mustered out on 9 Aug 1865.[4]
Lewis married [[Murray-29836|Jennie L. Murray on 24 Oct 1872 in Lowell, Massachusetts.[5]

By the time of the 1910 Census, Lewis and Jennie had been married 37 years. This was the first marriage for each of them. Jennie had two children, one was still living.
Lewis had lived in California for thirty-eight years. He was survived by his wife Mrs. Jennie Bonner, daughter Mrs. Stella Schmuck, brother Napoleon Bonner and sister Mrs. Lucy Richards.[3]
