Samuel Bolton OBE lived in Temuka, Canterbury, New Zealand.

Samuel was born 19 Apr 1873 in Hull, Yorkshire, England.[1] He was the son of George Bolton and Eleanor Carroll. [2]

As a 9 month old, he emigrated to Temuka, New Zealand from Cambridgeshire on the Ballochmyle sailed 4 Mar 1874.[3][4]

He was educated at Temuka District High School. He gained an appointment in the Post and Telegraph Department and rose rapidly in th service.[4]

On 6 May 1897, at the residence of the bride's mother on Shakespeare Rd , Hawke's Bay, he married Alice Hobbs, eldest daughter of the late Charles Simcon Jones of Sydney.[5][6]

He first enrolled in the military as a gunner in 1897, rising through the ranks to become a Major with the NZEF in the First World War, Army Pay Corps.[1]

After service in the North Island, he requested transfer to the South Island Battalion to be nearer his family.[1]

He served at Gallipoli, Egypt, France and Germany. He was awarded the O.B.E. for bravery in the danger zone. He was gassed while on active service.[4]

His awards include the OBE, 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, L & ES Medal, NZ Volunteer Service Medal, and Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal.[1]

In 1920 the New Zealand Prime Minister sent a telegram to the London High Commissioner requesting that Samuel return home as his services were needed by the post and telegraph department.[1]

As of Mar 1921 he worked at the Post Office, Geraldine.[1]

He was the postmaster of Dannevirke since about 1924.[4]

He passed away at Dannevirke on 28 Jul 1928[1] after a brief illness, age 55.[7] He left a widow, one son and one daughter: He had three sisters: Mrs George and Mrs Ford of Waimate, and Mrs Ord of Methven. [4]

Research Notes

Interestingly, although there are dozens of ancestry.com public trees for George and the three girls, there are none for Samuel. Maybe overlooked due to his birth in England? The obituary leaves no doubt this is the right details; it lists his three sisters.
