Biography

Margo, sometimes known as Margo Albert, was a Mexican film actress and dancer. She appeared in many American motion pictures and television productions, mostly in minor roles. Her more substantial roles include Lost Horizon (1937), The Leopard Man (1943), Viva Zapata! (1952), and I'll Cry Tomorrow (1955). Her final role was as murderess Serafina in the 1965 Perry Mason episode, "The Case of the Sad Sicilian".[1]

Born María Marguerita Guadalupe Teresa Estela Bolado Castilla y O'Donnell in Mexico City,[2] she was related by marriage to band leader Xavier Cugat, as niece of his first marriage to Carmen Castillo. She became a naturalized United States citizen, on November 9, 1942.[3]

Margo was married twice.

Margo was married to the screen star Francis Lederer 16 October 1937 in Las Vegas, Nevada. "Las Vegas, Nev. Oct. 16--Francis Lederer, 31-year-old film actor and world peace advocate, and Margarita Bolando, 20, stage and screen dancer known as "Margo," were married here today. The bride wore a blue frock and black hat. She was attended by her aunt, Mrs. Luz de Alanso. Best man was Jerry Asher, publicity writer who introduced Lederer and Margo to each other a year ago. The couple planned to return tonight to Lederer's ranch in San Fernando valley near Hollywood, deferring any honeymoon trip for the present because of their current picture work. Lederer was divorced from his first wife in his native Prague in 1935. Margo has not been married before."[4]

She married, secondly, to actor Eddie Albert on December 5, 1945 in New York City. "Margo Married to Eddie Albert, New York, Dec. 5 (AP)--Maria Margharita Bolada, known on the stage and screen as Margo, was married Wednesday to Lt. Eddie Albert, USNR, former motion picture actor, in the Chapel of Our Lady, St. Patrick's Cathedral. Margo's first marriage to Francis Lederer ended in divorce in 1940. Roman Catholic Church authorities said because it was a civil ceremony it was not recognized by the church." [5]

Margo and Eddie remained together for 40 years until her death from brain cancer in 1985. Their son Edward Albert[6] became an actor, and their adopted daughter Maria was her father's business manager.[7]

Obituary:[8]

LOS ANGELES(AP) -- A mariachi band played, dancers performed and the crowd rose to its feet in remembrance of Margo Albert, wife of actor Eddie Albert, who was eulogized by civic leaders including Mayor Tom Bradley. The community activist was 68 when she died in her Pacific Palisades home Wednesday. She had been ill for three months. Mrs. Albert's early career involved acting in several films, including "Winterset," "Lost Horizon," "Crime Without Passion" and "Viva Zapata." She was billed only a s Margo. She also performed as a dancer with Xavier Cugat.

The festive memorial service Sunday, attended by more than 300 people, was held at the Plaza de la Raza, a Hispanic cultural center Mrs. Albert helped create.

"Some knew her as a real bearcat," the mayor told those in attendance. "There was no way you could say no to that indomitable spirit of Margo Albert. Without her this cultural center would not have happened and we would not be here." Bradley went on to suggest that the Lincoln Park facility east of downtown Los Angeles be renamed the Margo Albert Plaza de la Raza.

To co-workers at the center where she chaired the board of directors, Mrs. Albert was known affectionately as Madrina, or godmother. Her daughter, Maria Carmen Zucht, helped organize the service, in which mariachis strolled among the crowd and students from a performance class danced.

As relatives, friends and admirers rose for a standing ovation, son Edward shouted, "Viva, Margo!" The mood of celebration was just as his mother would have wanted it, he said.

"She would have said, 'Let's take all this energy and let's put it into a new project,' " he proclaimed.
