Ellis was Choctaw.

Ellis was born in 1844 at Wade, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, the son of William Bohanan and Elizabeth "Betsey" Bohanan. Ellis passed away 26 Mar 1910 at Pushmataha, Oklahoma. He is buried at the Sardis Cemetery, Sardis, Pushmataha County, Oklahoma.[2]
