Major Hampton Boggs (ASN: 0-728557) received the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism from the President of the United States. Boggs was serving as Pilot of a P-38 Fighter Airplane in the 459th Fighter Squadron, 80th Fighter Group, TENTH Air Force, in aerial combat against enemy forces on March 25,1944, in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations. Captain Boggs shot down three enemy aircraft in a single mission on that date. His unquestionable valor in aerial combat is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 10th Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces. Hampton Boggs also received a Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroic actions during World War II.

The Wikipedia link calls him the United States' second highest scoring ace with the 459th Fighter Squadron, 80th Fighter Group during the China Burma India Theater (CBI), and notes that he later served as a pilot during the Korean War. It also adds the Air Medals he received as eight!

Major Boggs is buried at Idabel, McCurtain County, Oklahoma. His parents were W.H. and Catherine (Pendergast) Boggs O'Neal. His father had served as Superintendent of Garvin Public Schools.
