When the American Civil War broke out, Thaddeus registered for the draft, registering in the 24th Congressional District, Seneca, Cayuga, and Wayne counties, New York, registering in June of 1863.[3] He was 33 years old at the time of his registration, and worked as a lawyer. The draft registration noted that he had served for a brief time as a Captain in the New York 33rd Infantry. Thaddeus Bodine enlisted again on September 5, 1864, enlisting at Ovid, New York, and mustered in on September 6, serving as a Private in Company E of the New York 148th Infantry.[4][5] He mustered out at Richmond, Virginia on June 22, 1865.[4][6] The Muster Roll noted that he was born in Ovid and worked as a lawyer and described him, at the age of 34, as 5'11½ tall with brown hair and grey eyes. He later received a pension.[7] The 'New York Town Clerks Register of Men Who Served in the Civil War noted that Thaddeus Bodine was at the taking of the Richmond Armory, being "the first that entered."[8]
Thaddeus Bodine returned to Seneca County,[9] having inherited land there[10][11][12][13][14] when his parents died, his mother in 1857 and his father in 1868. In 1870, Thaddeus Bodine resided in the hotel "Franklin House" in Ovid Center,[15] operated by hotel keeper Nathaniel Hayt. Thaddeus, working still as a lawyer, roomed there with his younger brother, Edward, who sold musical instruments. Thaddeus later purchased additional land in Seneca County.[16][17][18][19][20]
Thaddeus Bodine married the niece of Nathaniel Hayt, Sarah Amanda Hayt (1849-1920), the daughter of Charles Diamond Hayt and Mary A. Jacacks. They had one known son together, Thaddeus Goyn Bodine (1875-1889). Thaddeus Bodine passed away at the age of 48[citation needed] and is buried at Ovid Union Cemetery in Ovid, New York.[21]
