Princess Sofia Alekseevna Dolgorukova was the sixth female Russian pilot and the fourth to serve in the military
Countess Bobrinsky and later Princess Dolgorukova was born in 1887. Daughter of Alexey Aleksandrovich Bobrinsky (Great-great-grandson of Empress Catherine II and G. G. Orlov) and Nadezhda Aleksandrovna Polovtsova. She worked as a Russian surgeon, pilot, and racing driver. [1] She became one of the first female racing drivers and was the sixth woman to become a pilot in the Russian Empire. She obtained her pilot’s certificate, number 234, on the 5th of June 1914. After the Russian Provisional Government had allowed women to serve in warfare in 1917, Sophie Alexandrovna Dolgorunaya volunteered for the Air Service. She flew missions as a pilot and/or observer with the 26th Corps Air Squadron for nine months.[2]Because of her connection to the Imperial family she was demobilized after the October Revolution. She was twice awarded the Russian ‘’Cross of St. George’’ ( abolished after the Oct 1917 Revolution ) for her military service. [citation needed]
She died in 1949.
