Trevor Lloyd Blunden was born in May 1843[1]. He was the son of Maunsell Andrews Blunden and Margaret Lodge.
In 1859 he emigrated to South Africa with his father Maunsell, his mother Margaret, and three of his five sisters (Rebecca, Elizabeth "Bessie" and Isabella). On 2 October 1859 the family boarded the ship Jalawar in Liverpool, England and arrived in Table Bay on 16 December 1859.
When old enough he made his way to the Diamond Fields at Kimberley. At some stage he was in the transport business operating wagons from the Cape into the hinterland.
Approximately 30 years after his arrival in South Africa, he was living in Modder River in the Northern Cape. It was here that in 1890 he built and owned a modest hotel known as The Criterion. During the Anglo-Boer war The Criterion was demolished by Lord Methuen’s soldiers, but it was later rebuilt and is still standing today.
Trevor married Mary Anne O’Malley on 15 December 1890 in Kimberley. He was a Bachelor; occupation Hotel Keeper. Mary was a Spinster, 22 years his junior[2]. They went on to have three children.
He went on to farm at Kalkbult in the Jacobsdal District of the Orange Free State. His Last Will and Testament was dated 8 March 1915, in which he nominated his sons Trevor Lloyd Blunden and Ambrose Christopher Blunden to be the sole and universal heirs to his estate.
Trevor Lloyd Blunden passed away on 3 October 1916 at the age of 74 as the result of an accident involving his cart and horses[3]. Cause of death was recorded as a "Fractured Skull and injuries from cart accident". Intended place of burial was recorded as Modder River graves.
At the time of his death he lived on his farm whilst his wife, Mary Anne, was running the Criterion Hotel.
