Education and Early Life

Sir Thomas and Lady Blount dedicated significant effort to Harry's education; evidenced from the substantial investment of both time and money in sending Harry to Geneva for his comprehensive learning experience. He was accompanied by a traveling tutor named "Necker" during this educational journey, and he shared this experience with his cousin, Sir Charles Tyrell. You can trace the details of this educational excursion by examining the personal correspondence exchanged between Tutor Necker and Lady Blount, as well as the letters from Sir Harry to his mother while in Geneva. These transcripts can be found at Free Space page : [8]

Sir Harry matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England on 18 July 1720.[9]

Whilst overseas Harry became proficient at French (detailed in letters from his Tutor Nektar). He was "a diligent and faithful antiquary".[10]. Harry according to Lady Van Koughnet in her History of Tyttenhanger describes him as fair, with a round, pleasant face and merry blue eyes. In later life his face became coarser, and his features thickened. He wore a smart satin coat and folded white necktie.

Family Background

Harry's father Sir Thomas [11] possessed a kind-hearted nature and was held in great affection. His meticulously kept records revealing the considerable time and effort he devoted to managing his household and estates. However, there are no remnants of his life that suggest any particular talent or inclination other than this. In contrast, his wife Katherine was a remarkable woman, known for her brilliance and refined taste and her cleverness. She had a deep appreciation for poetry, and books and an affinity for all things artistic. A keen interest in the contemporary world with a mind that was vibrant and energetic. However by 1742; Harry and his mother were at odds with one another, as we read in his letter dated 1 Aug 1742 which we can read at Blount Family. ( Harry is admonishing Lady Katherine for telling her tenants not to pay rents due to him and for not supporting him a a mother). As you read through these letters you cannot help but feel sorry for Harry as it appears after his father's death Harry became the primary contributor financially for Tyttenhanger and for his mother; a task he was ill prepared for.

Upon the birth of the first born issue named Grace,[12] Katherine emerged as a notable figure among the Blounts of Tyttenhanger. She possessed an imperious demeanor but clearly commanded respect. Her Twickenham residence housed an extensive collection of various curiosities, some of which were later brought to Tyttenhanger and some; which are still there today. Among her possessions were a sheath adorned with ornamental arrows, (worn at a themed ball where she portrayed Diana), a jewel box adorned with agate, an ivory flute with gold inlay, a Chinese cabinet housing a coin collection, a sturdy brass-bound strongbox, a silver-inlaid cabinet, and a lavishly embroidered quilt in a pale yellow shade (the natural color of silk). This quilt was accompanied by an embroidered infant's mattress and pillow, crafted for the birth of Grace, who tragically lived only a few months. Katherine also gifted Ridge Church with exquisite embroidered hangings, with remnants still in existence as an altar-cloth.[13].

The middle name Pope was adopted by many generations of the Blounts and although we may equate the use of the name Pope to memorialise Sir Thomas Pope (whom the Tyttenhanger estate (tied to the Abbey of St Albans) was granted to by the Crown in 1547); [14] the use of the name can be traced further back. To before 1575 appearing in the will of Richard Blount[15]this will can be found on page 5 titled Family Background.

Marriage and Family Connections

Harry Pope Blount (26) married Anne Cornwallis (24) on 19 September 1728 in Saint Peter Cornhill, London, England. The grooms Parish was Twickenham, Middlesex and the bride's parish was St. James Westminster. They were married by License. [16]. Her name from then on styled Lady Blount. Anne was the youngest of two daughters, both co-heirs of Charles Cornwallis, Esq., of Medlow, in Huntingdonshire. Anne brought with her to the marriage a fortune in 0000's. [17].

A marriage settlement occurred on the 18th of Sep 1728 placing in trust the vast array of land holdings, (by transfer in trust to others) for sole heir Harry so named in the settlement; described below. [18]. This settlement occured when Harry was 26 provided for by Sir Thomas Pope Blount of Twickenham, co. Middlesex, baronet, and Dame Katherine his wife. The settlement was regarding “'Harry Pope Blount their son”' and heir apparent the transfer of titles and other to Sir Andrew Thornhagh of Osburton, co. Nottingham, esquire, and Henry Shelley of St. Paul's, Covent Garden, co. Middlesex, esquire, in trust, of the following properties: lands in South Mimms, co. Middlesex; a farm and lands in Ridge; Millers Farm, now called New Inn, and lands in Shendley; a messuage called Sharps in Aldenham, and lands there; Potwells Farm in North Mimms and lands there and in Ridge; Kentish Farm and lands in Ridge; property in Islington and in St. Giles'-in-the-Fields, co. Middlesex; Coursers Farm and lands near Ti[y]ttenhanger Park in Ridge; Bowmans Green Farm in Ridge; tithes from Ti[y]ttenhanger and Colney in St. Peters and from the manors of Ti[y]ttenhanger and Napsbury; which formerly belonged to the Almoner's office of the monastery of St. Albans. The advowson of the vicarage of Ridge and the Rectory and tithes etc; the manors of Ti[y]ttenhanger and Blackside otherwise Coursers and Tittenhanger house and park, (Tankatts Farm in Offley being especially reserved from this release). The following trustees are also party to the deed: John Glanvill of St. Germans, co. Cornwall, esquire, Robert Shelley of the Strand, co. Middlesex, woollen-draper, James Butler of Warminghurst Park, co. Sussex, esquire, and John Clerkson of Gray's Inn, co. Middlesex, esquire.

Sir Harry succeeded as the 3rd Baronet Blount, of Tittenhanger, co. Hertford (established in 1680) on the 17 October 1731 and the Baronetage became extinct on his death.[19]

We are given some glimpse of the families that the Blount's married into or were related to, via their contribution of books contained within the archives of Hertfordshire, some still located at Tyttenhanger. [20].[21]

Death and Burial

Sir Harry Pope Blount died 8 Oct 1757 and was mentioned on a memorial in St Margaret Churchyard, Ridge, Hertsmere Borough, Hertfordshire, England with a death date of 1757.[23]

Four years later his wife Anne died 29 September 1761 at Wild Hill, Bishop's Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England. She was also buried at St Margaret Churchyard, Ridge, Hertsmere Borough, Hertfordshire, England. Anne died intestate and her estate was administered to a creditor on 14 October 1761.

Also buried at Ridge are

  1. Blount, Thomas Pope  b. 19 Jun 1700, d. 30 Jan 1701/2 (brother)
  2. Blount, Thomas Pope, 1st Bt.
  3. Blount, Thomas Pope, 2nd Bt.
  4. Katherine (Butler) Blount
  5. Anne (Cornwallis) Blount
  6. Jane (Caesar) Blount

The Church of St. Margaret [24]gives us some insight into benefactors of the church, dedicated in 1435 (confirmed by the will of John Kytewelde; Wills, archdeaconry of St. Albans, Stoneham, 27 d. 47, and Wallingford, 19d). The registers begin in 1558 and contain four books which provide baptisms, burials, and marriages to 1812.

Will and Probate

Sir Harry Pope Blount's Will was written 9 Mar 1758 and Administered 9th of Dec 1758 at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in England.[25]. An annex attached to the will was dated 25 Feb 1773.

Mentioned in the Will were:

  1. Ann Blount – Wife, Executrix, Sole Benefactor, Residuary Legatee
  2. Honoured Father and Mother - his wish to be buried with them at Ridge
  3. Brother James Pope Blount - no legacy mentioned
  4. Sister Catherine (married name) Freeman - no legacy mentioned
  5. Rich Arnott – Witness
  6. John Anstead – Witness
  7. James Howard – Witness

Mentioned in the annexe:

  1. Creditor Mark Young deceased
  2. Ann – Relict and Executrix “who formerly renounced the will and Execution” thereof.

We can only presume this annex would allow creditors of the estate of the deceased, named Mark Young; to make good debts owing to him by Harry for Mr Young's heirs. Under Harry's tenant the estate at Tyttenhanger was left fall to ruin. He was also in debt. The park pales were kept in bad repair and the coneys escaped from the warren, its value in consequence deteriorating. [26]. Family Letters also provide some insight and can be read at: Blount Family

Catharina (aka Catherine) (Blount) Freeman, youngest daughter, last surviving child and sister sibling to Harry; now became possessor of Tyttenhanger Park and Estate [27] and was also sole heiress of Hamels. She was married in 1730 to William Fre[e]man, Esq., of Hamels and Aspenden. When Catherine died (due to complications of the birth of her also named daughter Catherine); the Tyttenhanger Estate thereafter remained in the family's possession until 1973. Daughter Catherine Yorke born on July 10, 1759 married the Honorable Charles Yorke (1722-1770); the second son of the first Earl of Hardwicke. [28] [29]

Tyttenhanger had its ownership history tied to the Abbey of St Albans until the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Following that, it was granted by the Crown in 1547 to Sir Thomas Pope [30]the founder of Trinity College, Oxford.

Armorial Legacy

The same arms were used by the Baronet Blounts of Sedington, Worcestershire, London and Tyttenghanger Park in Hertfordshire . The right of Sir Henry (Harry) to bear them was controversial and after a long trial in the High Court of Chivalry, sentence was given against him by the Deputy Earl and Marshall of England in 1720. Harry then appealed to the Court of Delegates, and it appears this application was successful [31].

Family Monument , Ledger Slab

There is a black marble tablet at Ridge over the spot where the Blounts lie, with coats of arms at each corner, and this inscription:
'Here lye the bodies of Wylliam Blount
The father Esq. and Sir Thomas Pope Blount
Knight his sonne with the Ladie Frances
Blount his wyfe who had issue fower sonnes
Sir Thomas Pope Blount Knight Charles
Henrie and Charles Blount.
We Prayse God for all His Mercies.

Research Notes

Conventions used :

  • Transcriptions have been left as they appear in records and additions for understanding can be found within wording or after contained within square brackets[ ].
  • LNAB for grandmother Jane:
    • Noted as Jane Adelmare-Caesar Jane, daughter of Henry Caesar-Adelmare and Elizabeth Angell, was baptised[33]
  • The Gregorian calendar was not adopted until 1752 in the British Empire [34]and therefore the calender conventions for double dating apply to this profile and require double dating.
  • Was Anne Cornwallis (this profiles spouse) Anne Scott Cornwallis the daughter of Lord Charles Cornwallis and his second wife Lady Anne Scott, Duchess of Monmouth and Buccleuch (widow of James Duke of Monmouth) ? Anne was mentioned on a memorial in Westminster Abbey, Westminster, City of Westminster, Greater London, England with a death date of April 1690.[35]
  • Was Oscar a twin to 1st born Grace:Oscar Blount 1697–1697 [36]

Siblings

  • Harry's will refers to his genteel brother James and sister Catharina [Catherine, married name Freeman]. This settles the confusion where Catherine (Catharina) is mentioned by other references as niece.
  • The Stafford Blounts are all related to those of Twickenham and Tyttenhangar. They shared a common Armorial Bearing and in this reference mentions the connection of Thomas Pope through to the Blounts by marriage through Pope Blount (1592) and then through to Elizabeth Blount (d. 1593). Her third marriage to Sir Thomas Pope. As well, an illegitimate son(Leigh) (1502-1564) of Sir John Leigh and related back to Queen Katherine Howard. [37]
  • The will of Harry's father (dated 19 November 1729) was proven (by probate) on 20 October 1731. [38]

Images

  • No image of Arms: An image of the Shield only for the Blount family of Grendon, Hertfordshire can be viewed at: [39]. However, this image is not the full Coat of Arms/Armorial Bearings. From research also the shield is incomplete and should be dissected according to the 3rd lineage of Sir Harry Blount who by application and court process won the right to Bear. An image of full Armorial Bearings cannot be found that is not copyright protected. The shield alone image also is incorrectly attributed to that of the Blounts of Stafford, Twickenham, Tyttenhanger and London as it differs to that of the descriptions found.
  • No Image of Sir Harry:
    • The image located at [40]is likely disambiguation, as this is most likely an image of his kinsman Sir Henry Pope Blount, Author and Traveller. During research this confusion was used in comments related to bankruptcy as it appears Sir Harry did not appear to become a published bankrupt but Sir Henry did. There are no direct or primary references that link the use of aka Henry to that of Harry. Therefore these are omitted from this profile.
  • This Wikipedia article also confuses Sir Henry quoting his as author and third son of Sir Thomas Pope Blount but in fact Sir Henry is a different person and not the third son of Sir Thomas Pope Blount. Further, this image by Sir Peter Lely cannot be that of Sir Harry, as he was not born when Sir Peter Lely (14 Sep 1618 – 7 Dec 1680) was alive.
  • Brother Thomas :[41].
  • Sister: Catharina (aka Catherine) (Blount) Freeman (9 Apr 1704 - 10 Jul 1759)

[42]

  • Brother: John Pope Blount (Rev.) (1707–1734) took Deacon's orders and was buried at Ridge.[43]
