Sir John Ralph Blois, 8th Bt. was born on 18 August 1830 at County Wexford, Ireland. He was the son of Commander John Ralph Blois and Eliza Knox Barrett.

He was educated at Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, Devon, England. He gained the rank of officer in the Royal Navy. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Suffolk. He succeeded as the 8th Baronet Blois, of Grundisburgh and Cockfield Hall, co. Suffolk [E., 1686] on 12 June 1855. He held the office of High Sheriff of Suffolk in 1862.

He married Eliza Ellen Chapman, daughter of Captain Alfred Chapman, on 25 January 1865 at St. Michael's, Chester Square, London, England
