Lizzie was born in Oxford, Massachusetts, in 1883, the daughter of Charles and Emma Blanding. (Her birth record calls her "Lizzie Jane Benway" and shows her mother as Emma J. Blanding; father unknown.[1])
In 1896, she is listed as a resident at the Oxford Poor Farm. She was 12 years old and the only child.[2]
Lizzie was 16 years old when she was transferred from the State Almshouse at Tewksbury to the Massachusetts School for the Feeble-Minded in Waltham. She remained a resident there for 2 years,[3] until she was removed by the Board of Charity, being deemed "improved".[4]
She married in 1911 to Patrick Bolger, a steamfitter, son of Joseph and Alice (Lane) Bolger.[5] Patrick died in 1919. At the time of the 1920 census, she was a servant living in the household of Marshal Barry of Worcester.[6]
