Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Thomas Bland is a part of US Black heritage.

Thomas Bland was born about 1846 in Mississippi.

Thomas spoke at the Fourth of July Celebration by the Colored People at Port Gibson, Mississippi on July 4, 1866. The newspaper editor noted: "...the most practical address of the day was by Mr. Thomas Bland, who, by the way, is no preacher, but always has an eye to the business of this world; and yet, I am told has proven his fidelity in all the relations he has occupied; both as slave and freedman..."

In 1874, during Reconstruction, Thomas became the first black sheriff of Claiborne County, Mississippi. He held the post for less than a year. Claiborne had a majority black population.
