Biography

Barbara was born in Toronto, Ontario in July 1944, but has no memory of ever living there, as her parents actually lived in Kingston, Ontario. In the summer of 1953 she and her brother, Gerald Everest Blanchard, moved with their parents to Cornwall, Ontario.

Barbara graduated from Cornwall's St. Lawrence High School (SLHS) and then studied nursing at St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Cornwall's Hotel Dieu Hospital, becoming a Registered Nurse in Ontario, Canada in 1968. In October of 1969, Barbara moved to Ottawa and worked on the pediatric-surgical ward of the Ottawa Civic Hospital.

In December of 1969, she married her SLHS best friend, David John Petepiece, who at that time, was a 3rd-year engineering student at Ottawa's Carleton University. When David graduated they moved back to the Cornwall area, to a rural area in South Glengarry and to this day, they still reside in a ca. 1912 farmhouse. Their children, Kathryn Anne and Michael John were born in May 1974 and June 1975 respectively in the Cornwall Hotel Dieu Hospital and they now reside in Brockville, Ontario (Kat) and Ottawa (Mich). Kat is an accountant and Mich, like his Dad, is an engineer.

In January 1987 Barbara returned to school, at first part-time and then in September, as a full-time student at St. Lawrence College (Cornwall Campus). She was still employed as a R.N. (on a part-time, casual basis) on the pediatric ward of the Cornwall Hotel Dieu Hospital. Barbara graduated in June 1989 from SLC's Business Program with a diploma in Accounting. She continued working part-time in the HDH pediatric ward until the autumn of 1991 and then retired from nursing as by that time she was working full-time in a business office. Her final stipendiary employment was with Cornwall's Tri-County Literacy Council (TCLC), initially as the Secretary, and then as the an Administrative Assistant and the Coordinator of Volunteers. She retired from TCLC in March 2001.

Her husband David retired as the Controller of Plant with the Upper Canada District School Board in October 2001 and they began to spend their summers (mid-May to mid-October) at the Petepiece Family summer cottage on Moulinette Island (Long Sault, Ontario) returning to their South Glengarry farmhouse after the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. Barbara continues her association with TCLC as a volunteer and is currently (since 2017) the Chair of the agency's Board of Directors. She is also on the Board of Directors of the Beek Lindsay Seniors' Residence in Cornwall, Ontario, and is active in Cornwall's Trinity (Bishop Strachan Memorial) Anglican Church and with Anglican Diocese of Ottawa.
