Obituary

The following obituary was found in the home of Ola May Riggan Arnold, great granddaughter of Nancy;[11]
AGED LADY DEAD
January 1910
Mrs Nancy Hobgood, mother of the late Dr R.W. Hobgood, died Jan. 4, 1910.
On the night of the 4th instant Mrs Nancy Hobgood, the most aged and one of the most prominent women of Granville Co., passed away at the ripe age of 95 or thereabouts, was the relict of the late Joseph Dennis Hobgood, who died in 1862, having been a widow for 48 years.
She was the mother of 11 children, 5 of whom are dead. The living are: James M Hobgood; Isaac W Hobgood; Nat D Hobgood; Mrs Lillie B Parker of Wake County; Mrs Flora E Royster; and Mrs Della O Puckett. Her oldest son, the late Dr R.W. Hobgood a foremost Granville citizen, died about 2 years ago.
In addition to being the mother of 11 children, Mrs Hobgood was the grandmother of 98 grandchildren, the great grandmother of 62, and the great great grandmother of 59. The sum total of her descendants being 230 of who 189 are now (1910) living.
Mrs Hobgood was a member of Hester Baptist Church, of which she was an active and consistent member in her active days. One who knew her well said of her, "She was a woman of fine intelligence, great industry, and unusually fine character. She loved her people and they were devoted to her motherly instincts, loving ways and noble character. Granville County has raised but few women of greater personal worth or purer character."
The deceased was very successful in accumulating property and, besides her good name, leaves a very valuable estate.
The last few years of her life she spent with her daughter, Mrs Della O Puckett, wife of Joe Puckett, Esquire, her death occurring at the Puckett home.
She was buried on the old homestead, in this county, about 5 miles from Oxford. The Rev. Dr. R.H Marsh, her paster, conducted the last sad rites which were witnessed by all the living children and many sorrowing friends.
