Although the 7 Feb 1601 Cochrane charter calls Alexander the "third" (tertio) lawful son of John Blair of that Ilk, that is a mistake, for it is known from other muniments that John Blair's eldest son and heir designate was John the younger. The clerk who wrote up the charter was probably misled by the fact that this charter omitted John the younger, who as heir to the name and lands of Blair was not included in the entail of the name and lands of Cochrane (for under no circumstances would John Blair want his son and heir designate John to extinguish the Blair name so he could inherit the name and lands of Cochrane). Thus, of the sons of John Blair of that Ilk named in the charter, Alexander was third in order, but in fact he was John's fourth son.
