Research Notes

SCM Stewart Clan Magazine, August 1934.
"John Blair of that Ilk, son of David Blair, son of James Blair, son of James Blair, son of Roger Blair, son of David Blair, son of William Blair, son of William Blair. This first John Blair must be the one named in SP III p.438, where he is shown to have married (before 15 Nov. 1500) Helen Montgomery, daughter of Hugh Montgomery, 1st. Earl of Eglinton, by his wife Helen Campbell of Argyll. John had two daughters, Egidia and Elizabeth, and a son, John, his heir. [ LG p.505 says, "John Crauford, 12th of Craufurdland, m. Margaret, dau. of John Blair of that Ilk, by the Lady Elizabeth Montgomery, dau. of the 1st Earl of Eglintoun, and d. in 1583 . . . ." This should say Helen Montgomery, not Elizabeth. However, BP p.1784 says that a certain John Blair of that Ilk had a daughter named Margaret who married John Maxwell of Pollok, who died 1517. These must be referring to the same John Blair, but whether or not these two daughters named Margaret are in fact the same woman is not quite as certain."[9][10]

Just a note that, as shown in my previous comments here, based on the documented succession of the Blairs of Middle Auchindraine (cadet of the Blairs of that Ilk), this John must have died circa 1548. The John Blair of that Ilk who is known to have died in 1567 was the son of this John Blair -- the son who was mistakenly skipped by Paterson and the other early Blair writers, who thus misassigned the date of his death to his father.

Is there a source for the date of death (approximate or otherwise)?

Yes. As indicated in my previous comment quoting researcher Peter Murray on the succession of the Blairs of Middle Auchindraine, the sources documenting that succession are how we know that this John Blair must have died circa 1548 or so (giving him a fairly normal lifespan for this period of time). That would mean the John Blair of that Ilk who died in 1567 must be the son who married Helen Ross in 1524.

The sources of the Blairs of Middle Auchindraine succession were quoted and cited by James Paterson in his account of that family. Paterson's accounts of both the Blairs of that Ilk and the Blairs of Middle Auchindraine were slightly off, though, since he'd mistakenly skipped the John Blair who married Helen Ross. See the Wikitree profiles of the Blairs of Middle Auchindraine for the relevant sources that indicate when this John Blair must have died.

Regarding the date of John Blair's marriage to Helen Montgomerie (called Elizabeth by Paterson et al.), Balfour Paul in his Scots Peerage, Vol. 3, p.438, cites William Fraser's "Memorials, i. 35" for the statement that "Helen" Montgomerie, daughter of Hugh, 1st Earl of Eglinton, married John Blair of that Ilk "before 15 November 1500."

Turning to the cited page 35 in volume one of Fraser's "Memorials", this is what we read:

"11. Lady Helen, married John Blair of that Ilk. His father, John Blair of that Ilk, granted a reversion of the lands of Drummostyr and the Holmbyre, in the barony of Ardrossan, to Hew Lord Montgomerie, for payment of 500 merks as the tocher of Helen, daughter of Hew, on her marriage to John Blair, son and apparent heir of the granter, dated 15th November 1500."

As his source for this information, Fraser cites "Drummoster Writs at Eglintoun."

Thus, as Scots Peerage stated, John Blair and Helen Montgomerie were married in the late autumn of 1500, prior to 15 Nov. of that year. This provides the primary source from which the information regarding John Blair's marriage to Helen was derived. It also provides a primary source identifying John Blair as the son and heir apparent of John Blair of that Ilk.

The extract from my 13 June 1996 post to Gen-Medieval has errors due to my too great a reliance on Robert Douglas' early account of the Blairs of that Ilk in his "Baronage of Scotland." It looks to me at this time like the current Wikitree accounting of the line of the Blairs of that Ilk is much more accurate than my early understanding of it in 1996, but there is still some confusion regarding the John Blair who married Elizabeth/Helen Montgomerie and his son John Blair who married Helen Ross.

As for this particular generation, this is what James Paterson has to say in his history of Ayrshire (1852), Vol. 2, p.414 --

"XII. John Blair of that Ilk succeeded his father in the reign of James V. He had a Charter, 12th August, 1540, of the five merk land of Dalquhone in Ayrshire; and another, 12th March, 1544, of the nine merk land of Bogton, Holmhead, and two third-parts of the mill of Cathcart in the shire of Renfrew -- which lands continued in the family at least till 1679, when part of them was sold to Hamilton of Aikenhead, ancestor of James Hamilton of Holmhead. He died in the end of the reign of Queen Mary. He married Lady Elizabeth Montgomerie, daughter of Hugh, first Earl of Eglinton, by whom he had a son, John; and, a daughter, Margaret, married to John Craufurd of Craufurdland. He was succeeded by his son,

"XIII. John Blair of that Ilk, . . . ."

Paterson also shows in a footnote on this page:

"Ninian, son of John Blair of that Ilk (whether XI. or XII. we know not), and his spouse, viz., Isobel Kennedie, Lady of Cloncarde, had a charter granted to them by James, Commendator of Kelso and Melrose, dated 8th October, 1553, of all and haill the 5 1/2 merk land of Fischertoun, in the lordship of Monkton. -- Marg. Sig. in the W.S.'s Library."

Paterson's account of the John Blair of that Ilk who married Elizabeth Montgomerie is incorrect, because Paterson was unaware of an additional John Blair in the lineage, namely, the John Blair who married Helen Ross -- he was the son of John Blair and Elizabeth/Helen Montgomerie.

Peter Murray of Markham, Ontario, provides the following corrected, de-tangled account of these two generations of this family, in his unpublished paper, "Blair Family -- Ancient Lairds of Blair, in Ayrshire, Scotland" (12 March 1999):

"JOHN BLAIR of that Ilk, succeeded his father in the reign of James V (1513+) and obtained charters to additional lands in Ayrshire dated 1540 and 1544. He resigned his lands to his son John in 1546. How long he lived after that is not known. In 1513 he inherited half of the property of Middle Auchindrane from his father killed at Flodden. He would appear to have surrendered or bequeathed this property to a nephew and namesake in 1548. In that year his share was reunited with the share of his brother James Blair who had died in 1547 and confirmed in possession of John Blair of Middle Auchindrane, who was probably a son of James. John Blair of that Ilk married, apparently at a young age, Elizabeth Montgomerie, daughter of Hugh, 1st Earl of Eglinton, by his wife Helen Campbell daughter of Colin, 1st Earl of Argyll. They had a son who is apparently in error omitted in most accounts of the family,

"JOHN BLAIR of that Ilk, obtained a charter to Blair and other lands on the resignation of his father in 1546. He succeeded his father and died ca.1567 not long before the death of his son and successor. He married in 1524, in the lifetime of his father (marriage dispensation), Helen Ross, daughter of John, 2nd Lord Ross of Halkhead. The accounts of Douglas, Robertson and Paterson omit him and his marriage, apparently in error, attributing his issue incorrectly to his father's marriage with Elizabeth Montgomerie. He left issue, presumably by Helen Ross:

"1a. John Blair of that Ilk, who follows below.

"2a. Alexander Blair of Windy-edge, stated by his grandson the celebrated Revd Robert Blair to be brother-germain of the laird of Blair. Which Laird of Blair was his brother is deduced from the dates of other family members. In addition to the family of Revd Robert Blair and his Blair descendants of Avontoun, this Alexander Blair is ancestor of the families of Blair of Giffordland and Blair of Burrowland. (see BLAIR OF GIFFORDLAND for the descent of our ancestor Sarah Blair, wife of Samuel Watkinson)

"3a. Ninian Blair, had with his spouse, Isobel Kennedy, Lady of Cloncarde, a charter to the land of Fishertoun in Monkton, dated 1553. The name Ninian appears also in the family of Helen Ross the apparent mother of this Ninian Blair, which may explain his name which is otherwise unknown in the Blair family.

"4a. Margaret Blair, stated explicitly by Paterson to be daughter of John Blair and Elizabeth Montgomerie but from the dates must have instead been son of John Blair and Helen Ross. She married John Craufurd of Craufurdland, parents of John Craufurd of Craufurdland and Thomas Craufurd of Giffordland. The latter was father-in-law of John Blair of Giffordland (see CRAUFURD OF GIFFORDLAND and BLAIR OF GIFFORDLAND for our line of descent.)"

Per this accounting of the Blair genealogy, then, this John Blair (who married Elizabeth Montgomorie) died circa 1548, while this John's son John (whom married Helen Ross) died circa 1567.

I have some information about a conflict in 1510 between this John Blair and the Archbishop of Glasgow. I'm not pre-1500 certified so I can't add it. I recommend adding the following:

On Sunday, 21 July 1510, John brought Sir Thomas Brown into the Dalry church near Blair House, leading to a conflict with the church and the Archbishop of Glasgow. Since Brown had been excommunicated he was not allowed to associate with parishioners much less be on church grounds. Refusing to leave, Brown was forcibly ejected and John Blair had to answer for his actions to the Archbishop on 31 July 1510.

I'm happy to collaborate further.

Per the source information I've just added to his bio, he is connected to the wrong parents. Do you have any sources (other than Burke's, which is notorious for having incorrect information) for this lineage?
