In the 1820 census, John was in Edgefield, South Carolina, United States.[1]
In the 1830 census, John was in Edgefield, South Carolina.[2]
John Blackwell died in 1835, and Gilbert Tenant applied to be administrator of his estate on May 4, 1835. His probate records I have found included letter of administrator, appointment of appraisers, and list of inventory.[3][4]
After John's death in 1835, his slaves were found in a record transfering ownership. The location of the slaves was recorded in the accounting of his estate in his probate papers[5][4]
In many trees, John's father was listed as Isaiah Blackwell, but there really seems to be little proof.
Possible 1st Wife
I found a land deed dated in 1816 which indicated John's wife at the time was named Juda, possible daughter of Stephen Tompkins. I don't think there were 2 Johns in Edgefield County, but I'm unsure.[6][7]
This shows there may have been an earlier marriage than his marriage to Lucretia.
Also, since Juda was alive in 1816, some of the older children may be hers, or all of them, and Lucretia was a step mother. There is 7 year gap between 2 of the children, maybe this is where a new marriage occured.
