Biography
Son of James Blackley and Elizabeth Cooke Blackley.
William resided in Granville County and enlisted in Company E, 15th North Carolina Troops in Franklin County at the age of 24, on May 16, 1861, for the war. He mustered in as Private and was promoted to Corporal on September 18, 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant on August 1, 1862. He was present or accounted for until captured at Crampton's Pass, Maryland on September 14, 1862. He was confined at Fort Delaware yankee prison, Delaware until transferred to Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia on October 2, 1862 and exchanged on November 10, 1862. He returned to duty prior to December 13, 1862 when he was wounded in the hip at Fredericksburg, Virginia. He returned to duty prior to January 1, 1863 and was promoted to 1st Sergeant in May-October 1864. He was present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.
