Biography

Susan was born in 1855 at Westleigh, Modbury. She is the daughter of Phillip Blackler and Charlotte Crimp. In 1861 her father Phillip was 55 a farmer of 240 acres employing two men and living at Westleigh Farm House, Modbury, with Charlotte 52 and ten children, five born at Newton Ferrers and five born at Modbury, Philip 29, John G 23, Mary J 21, Charlotte 20, George 18, Richard 16, Maria 14, Harriet 11, Charles 9 and Susan 6.

In 1881 her mother Charlotte 72 widow, was a farmer of 240 acres at Leigh, Modbury, living with George 38, Harriet 30, Susan 25, grandson John Henry Beckman 12, born at Salcombe, and two servants.

Susan married Charles Alfred Cowles, son of Charles Cowles, in 1884. In 1891 Susan Cowles 35 and Charles A Cowles 31 farmer, lived at Aylston Farm, Modbury, with her mother Charlotte 82 and her unmarried sister Harriet Blackler 40, and two servants. They were farmers at Aylston Farm, Modbury in 1901, no issue. and in 1911 at Gate Farm, Brownton, Modbury with Susan’s sister Harriet Blackler, single and living on private means.

“Deaths. Cowles. January 15th, at Brook House, Modbury, Susan, beloved wife of Charles Cowles, aged 66 years.” [Western Morning News, Plymouth, 20 Jan 1921] “Modbury Funeral. The funeral of Mrs Charles Cowles, of Brook House, Modbury, took place on Thursday at St Georges Church, Modbury, and was largely attended. The chief mourners were Mr Charles Cowles (husband), Miss Blackler (sister), Mr and Mrs Amery, Mr and Mrs John Wills, Mr and Mrs Luscombe, Mr and Mrs Mumford, Mrs Gibbons (Newton), Mr Phillip Roger, Mrs Rogers (Chantry) and the Misses Rickman. . The coffin was carried by deceased’s nephews and great-nephews, Messrs J Rickman, C Rickman, G Tribble, G Blackler, R Roger, L Blackler, R Rickman, A Rickman, W Rickman, A Luscombe, H Luscombe and C Wyatt. [Western Morning News, Plymouth, 22 Jan 1921] Charles Alfred Cowles of Brook House, Modbury died 4 Oct 1932 with probate to Richard William Hill Cowles farmer.
