Biography

Flag of Lancashire (adopted 2008)
Samuel Blackburn was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England.

Samuel Blackburn was born on the 22nd April 1815 at Byron St, Liverpool, Lancashire, England, the son of Thomas Blackburn and Ann Mercer, and baptised the same day, or soon after.[1]

On the 6th June 1841 Samuel and his family were living at Camden Street, Liverpool. Others home at the time were his father, Thomas, mother, Ann, younger brother, Thomas, and also Sarah Joslin (40-44, relationship unknown), Lancashire-born Elizabeth Chadwick (20-24, relationship unknown), Scotland-born Elisabeth Raleigh(15-19, relationship unknown), and Sarah Roberts (20-24, relationship unknown)[2]

Samuel married Elizabeth Hannah Bickerton Williams, daughter of Sir John Bickerton Williams, Knt, LLD, FSA, on the 21st October 1841, in the Independent Chapel, Chapel Street, district Wem, Shropshire, with the marriage being pre-announced on the 27th and 29th September, and the 2nd October.[3] [4] [5]
Over the next years Samuel and Elizabeth had eight known children:

  1. William (1842—1843)
  2. Thomas (16 Mar 1844-Islington,Liverpool,England—18 May 1912-Adelaide,South Australia)
  3. John Bickerton (1845—1881)
  4. Elizabeth (1846—?)
  5. Mary Ann (Minnie) (1848—10 Feb 1869)
  6. Eleanor (1850—1876)
  7. Henry Mercer (1852—1916)
  8. Edward Herbert (1856—1932)

On the 7th April 1861 Samuel was a Commission Merchant, living at 56 New Street, Altrincham, (on the SW outskirts of Greater Manchester). Also home at the time were his wife, Elizabeth, and their children Thomas (17), John Bickerton (15), Elizabeth (14), Mary Anne (12) and Eleanor (11).[6]

Samuel was said to be a "Colonial Broker" - a go between for British investors seeking profitable investment in colonial developments and goods. This is probably the same as the Commission Merchant as listed in the 1861 census.

Samuel Blackburn died on the 1st January 1867 aged 51, at "Grassmeade" in Wandsworth, near Wimbledon, Surrey, England, of phthisis-pulmonalis TB, with his son Thomas Blackburn present at his death.[7]
[8] Samuel was buried in the Putney Lower Common Wandsworth Cemetery, Surrey, where his daughter, Minnie, and later his wife Elizabeth, would also be laid to rest.[9]
