Joseph Black was born in Georgia between 1897 and 1900, to unknown parents who were also born in Georgia.[1] He came to Plainfield, Union County, New Jersey around 1914.[2]
In the 1920 census, he was 23 years old, living in Plainfield and working as a truck chauffeur.[3]
He married Martha Watkins around 1921. Their children were:
In the 1930 census, he was living in Plainfield with his wife and five children. He was working as an automobile mechanic.[4]
In the 1940 census, he was living in Plainfield with his wife and six children. He was working as a night watchman at a garage.[5]
In 1952, his son Joseph Black Jr was playing baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers and made history as the first African American pitcher to win a World Series game.[6]
At the time of his death, Joseph Black Sr had lived in Plainfield for 60 years. He was a retired employee of Mack Motors, and operated a taxi service in Plainfield after retiring from Mack.[2]
Joseph Black Sr passed away in 1974 and was buried at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains, New Jersey.[7]
