Fact: Obituary, New York Tribune (2 June 1888 (published)) "General Henry W. Birge died of apoplexy yesterday at the Gedney House. He witnessed the parade on Wednesday, returned to the hotel about 4 p.m. and took a hearty meal. Shortly after dinner a bell-boy was called to his room and the General was found lying unconscious on his bed. Dr. Greene, of Belleview Hospital, and Dr. W. F. He remained unconscious until 6:22 yesterday morning, when he died.// General Birge, who was about fifty-eight, was born in Norwich, Conn. He was a nephew of General Buckingham, at one time Governor of Connecticut and later a United States Senator, and when the war broke out he went to the front as Major of the 4th Connecticut Regiment. Afterward he commanded the 15th Connecticut, taking it to New Orleans, where he was put in charge of the city and made a brigadier general. He commanded a division in the memorable Shenandoah campaign under Sheridan.// The General leaves several sons in business in the West, and a sister in Milwaukee.
