John R Byrd/Bird was born on February 22, 1836, in Walton County, Georgia, the child of Thomas and Eveline. John enlisted in the infantry in Company H, Georgia 3rd Infantry Regiment on 11 Jun 1861. Was at Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, the Wilderness, Chancellorsville, Bloody Angles, Petersburg, Mustered out on 09 Apr 1865 at Appomattox Court House, After the war he married his first wife, Emily Frances Sockwell, on April 2, 1867, in Newton County, Georgia. John and Emily had ten children. After Emily's death in 1887 John married his second wife, Nettie, in Georgia about 1990. He died on January 16, 1919, in Oxford, Georgia, at the age of 82. John is interned at Dover Cemetery, Dialtown, Newton County, Georgia

MR. J. R. BIRD PASSES AT HOME NEAR OXFORD Was The Last Surviving Member But One of The "Young Guards" of Civil War Fame The Covington News, January 23, 1919
Oxford, Ga., Jan. 21. - The last member but one of the "Young Guards" of Newton County, National Guardsmen of 1861, John R. Bird, 83 years of age, died at his home two miles from Oxford Thursday morning and was buried Friday afternoon at Dover. Mr. Bird went through the Civil War as a member of Company H, 3d Georgia Regiment. He was at Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, the Wilderness, Chancellorsville, Bloody Angles, Petersburg, Appomattox, coming out at the end of the war without ever having received a wound, although he was in the thickest of the fighting at all the places mentioned. Mr. Bird is survived by the following sons and daughters: W. Summerfield Bird, Davis, Okla., mechanic in the oil fields; J. Tom Bird, postmaster, Oxford, Ga.; Homer Bird, Camak, Ga., with the Georgia Railroad; Robert Bird, farmer, Newton County; Mrs. Evie Teagle and Blanch Bell, of Buckhead; Mrs. Maud Parks, of Louisville, two brothers and one sister also survive, W. M. Bird, of Oxford, and Scott Bird, of Logansville, and Mrs. W. A. (Anne Bird) Ellington, of Oxford.
