Biography

John Birch was born in Manchester, Lancashire, England.

John Birch (~1822-1893) was born in Manchester around 1822. ^[1] He was the son of a hatter, John Birch. ^[2]

He married Mary Hall at St Mary's church in Eccles on the 9th January 1842. ^[3] At that time he was still under age and working as a warehouseman. He gave an address of Pendleton. ^[2]

Their first child, John was christened in 1846 whilst they were living in Chorlton when John (senior) was employed as a packer ^[4] but before 1851 they moved to Gorton and were living on Brougham Street when the 1851 census was taken and John, having changed employment, was a fireman. ^[6] They moved again soon after as Ann was christened 4 months later when they lived on Gorton Lane. ^[5]

In the mid 1850s they were living in Longsight and John was still a fireman ^[7] but they moved again nearby to Tank Row, Gorton where they lived between 1859-1861. ^{[8] [9]}

1871 brought a change of scene and they were living in Carmarthen in Wales when John was a railway fireman ^[10] but before long they returned to the Manchester area and in 1881 John, now widowed, was living on Tipping Street in Openshaw. The census shows him to be employed as a watchman on the railway. ^[11]

In 1891 he was still working as a coal yard man and lived in lodgings on Caledon Street in Ancoats. ^[12]

He died on the 12th October 1893 ^[13] and was buried in Failsworth Cemetery alongside his wife. ^[14]
