Biography

BILYOU SAVED CAR FROM BURNING

George Bilyou of 17 Hone street, an employee of Connelly Drug Company, corner of Broadway and Strand, this morning extinguished a fire that might have caused considerable damage in the downtown area, if it were not for his quick action. A Packard touring car, parked near the dry goods store of David Weil on Broadway, just around the corner from the Strand, in some manner caught fire, and the blaze was making rapid headway when seen by Bilyou. He ran into the Connelly drug store where he works, and got a fire extinguisher. Hastening to the car, he poured the chemicals onto the flames, quenching them before they had gained uncontrollable headway. The action of Mr. Bilyou, who is one of the youngest members of the Union Hose Volunteer Fire Company, was highly commended by downtown merchants who realized that his act saved the city considerable money in that the fire trucks were not called out and in preventing the flames from spreading to other cars parked nearby and possibly to awnings causing considerable damage to store fronts. - The Kingston Daily Freeman, Kingston, N.Y., Wednesday Evening, December 16, 1931 [1]
