Indiana's seventh Governor. Bigger served as Indiana's Governor from 1840 to 1843. Born and educated in Ohio, he moved to Indiana in 1829. He served in the state's lower house in 1833 to 1835 and under the Whig ticket, became Governor of Indiana in 1840. Bigger served as Governor until 1843. Unable to get re-elected for a 2nd term, Bigger moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana to practice law. (bio by: Matt Clevinger)

Excerpt from Xenia Gazette article, "Historic Cemetery in Sugarcreek To Get Care" by Dave Masters, Gazette Staff Writer, Wed., 12/15/1965:

"John Bigger, Sr. 1760-1831, Revolutionary Soldier and early Sugar Creek elder [Associate Church]. Grandson of Matthew Bigger of Ballymonie, Ireland, and Martha Bigger who is buried in the Robinson United Presbyterian graveyard in Washington County, Pennylvania, as one of the first white women to be buried west of the Alleghenys.

He was the father of Thomas Bigger who served Sugar Creek as a ruling elder for half a century, and grandfather of Dinsmore Bigger who zealously followed for ninety-four years the faith of his fathers.

For more than one hundred and twenty-five years John and his decendants were privileged to serve as elders of the congregation.

At his side sleeps his wife Mary, a distant relative of the same family name, 1763-1844. She was born in Maryland and was a sister of Colonel John Bigger, Legislator and pioneer of Warren County, Ohio, and aunt to Governor Samuel Bigger Find A Grave: Memorial #14179107 of Indiana and his brother Finley, Registrar of the U. S. Treasury.

John and Mary migrated from the Conococheague region to the Maryland-Pennsylvania border to Kentucky in 1788 where their children were born, thence to Ohio after the turn of the century with the church migration [1804-05] [with] other members of the family already here." ^[1]
