American financier, born in Philadelphia on January 8, 1786.[1] He graduated from Princeton University in 1801 and at the age of 17, he was the first editor of the journals of Lewis and Clark, who surveyed the western territories of the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase. Biddle married Jane Margaret Craig on October 3, 1811, and they had six children. His mansion, Andalusia, on the Delaware River, was built in 1794 by his father-in-law, John Craig.[2]
Biddle became President of the Second Bank of the United States and after a turbulent fight with President Andrew Jackson, the bank failed in 1836.[1] Biddle died on February 27, 1844 at his Andalusia estate and is buried at Saint Peter's Episcopal Churchyard; Philadelphia.[3]
