Biography

Archer Bevill was the son of Archer and Ann Bevill. His father dec'd in Amelia County, Virginia the year 1785. Chancery complaints filed against the estate executor of Archer Bevill, Sr., dec'd, list Ann as his widow and his children; Archer Bevill, George Bevill, and Fanny (Bevill), wife of Frederick Leonard.^[1] Archer's age is estimated by him not being named as a complainant in the first suit filed by his mother in 1800, and the year of his marriage.

Archer married the 13th of August of 1803 to Mary "Polly" C. (Foster) Webster. He and Mary filed a chancery bill in Amelia Court in July of 1804 against William Webster, administrator of Anthony Webster, to settle the estate of her deceased husband. This suit revealed Polly Foster had one child, Mary S. Webster, when she married to Archer.

Archer Bevill appeared on the delinquent tax list of Amelia County in 1806 which noted his removal to Nottoway County, Virginia.

Archer Bevill was listed in Nottoway County, Virginia during the 1810 census and in Cumberland County, Virginia during the 1820 census. Archer had rented a plantation there in 1818 from John Holman, Sr. It was here Archer Bevill died intestate in December of 1822 leaving Polly widowed once again (bill for his coffin dated 21 Dec).

Polly requested Archer's estate to be administered by Seymour Holman. The administration of Archer's estate was drawn out for many years in Chancery. It appears Seymour Holman neglected to account for some of the crops he'd sold, two slaves, various live stock, and some items he personally had purchased from the estate. This record likely pertains to his nephew, also an Archer Bevill. Archer Jones Bevill was named in Amelia County Chancery Cause "Widow of James Bevill vs. Admn of James Bevill" filed in 1787. Woodley, Robert, & Archer Jones Bevill were listed as minor heirs of James Bevill, dec'd. Guardian was mother Susanna (Woodley) Bevill. Minor sons would have been born after 1767 and were likely listed in birth order. [3]
