Ira was born before 1842 in either Jackson or Gwinnett County Georgia. His parents lived in Jackson in 1840 and in Gwinnett in 1850. He was the son of Lovick Betts and Mary Clack.
Ira H. Betts is listed as a private in Company I, 16th Regiment, Georgia Infantry which organized in Lawrenceville, Georgia July 16, 1861, by Captain Henry O. Thomas.
He was captured at Cold Harbor, Virginia, June 1, 1864. He died of variola [smallpox] at Elmira, New York, January 27, 1865. He is buried at Woodlawn National Cemetery, grave # 1664, Elmira, NY. [1]
