Biography
Charlotte was born in 1900 [1]. Charlotte Betts the illegitimate daughter of Mary Ann Betts.

Charlotte suffered a bigamist marriage in about 1920 to a Mr. Moss, who is said to have served 6 months in jail for marrying Charlotte whilst still married to someone else.
During the 1920s she worked/lived (?) at Melton Mowbray Workhouse along with Doreen and Joan, from there she moved to Barkestone-Le Vale to be a housekeeper for George W Hand following the death of his wife Elizabeth. Charlotte married the son Arthur Hand on 28 December 1929 [2] they had 4 children, Francis, Norah, Gladys(Brenda) and John. Sadly, her husband Arthur died on the eve of WW2 and George was killed shortly afterwards. Charlotte lived at Barkestone until her death. During the 1950s she had a win on the Nottingham Post “Spot the Ball” competition which enabled her to buy the cottage she lived in from the Duke of Rutland Belvoir Estate, after her death in 1996 the cottage was sold and the new occupants renamed it “Charlotte Cottage”
Buried 20 Nov 1996 Barkestone Le Vale Church.
