Henry Best was the son of Henry (Beste) Best Best, not Richard. There was a Henry born to Richard Best in 1544, but there is no further record. This Henry was very likely a cousin to the son of Richard. English naming patterns of the time period offers further proof. He did not name any of his children Richard, nor did his children name any children Richard.
He was christened on 3 Dec 1553 in Halifax, Yorkshire, England. His christening record says, "Henry fili Henrici Beste de Warley 03 Dec 1553," which translates Henry the son of Henry Best of Warley (Yorkshire).[1][2]
He married Grace Boithes, daughter of John Boithes and Isabella Swift, on 23 October 1577 at Halifax, Yorkshire, England.[3]
Children:
He died after 9 Mar 1627 when he wrote a memorandum to his will, suggesting that he had written the original at a previous date.
His will read:
the 9th of march 1627 Memorandum that I Henry Best of Houldsworth in the township of Ovenden do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following. First, I give and bequeath to Abraham Shawe forty pounds; also, I give to three children of Michael Firbher my grandchidlren six pounds; also, I give to Marie Best twenty shillings; also, I give to Henry Best my grand child my bed with all that belongeth to it; also, I give to Michael Best my son Abraham Shaw and Robert Swayne all my apparel; also, I give to John Illingworth twelve pence; also, to Anne Brooke 7 pence; also, I give to Anne Wilson twelve pence; also eight pounds I leave to bring me forth, and if any remain, I give it to my grandchild Henry Best, and I make Abraham Shawe my executor. Signed by mark. Witnesses: Tho. Lovjoy, John Illingworthe, Michael Best; Proved August 1628.
Some online trees show, without evidence, Elizabeth Robinson as the second wife of Henry Beste and the mother of Bridget Beste. There is no record of this marriage or of her existence. The first mention of the wife of Henry Best dying is 27 July 1622,[9] long after Grace was born. Yorkshire records did not provide the name of mother's on any birth records. However, Bridget did name a daughter Grace, which fits with the naming patterns of the time.
